Next, consider the texture of the hay. While this can be a matter of preference to some extent, soft and pliable hay is generally considered to be of better quality than stemmy hay. Additionally, when it comes to legumes such as Alfalfa hay, a high leaf to stem ratio is preferred as it indicates better quality.

Also, the smell of the hay is another important factor to consider. A sweet, fresh smell is a good indicator of quality, while any moldy or musty odors should be avoided.
